Whose World Is It?

Whose World Is It?

Throughout the summers of 1992 & 1993 in the Queensbridge Projects of New York city, a young man wrote about his observations of the delicate balance between optimism and nihilism in a broken system that worked hard to crush the will of youth, hoping for a better way of life. His words became legendary.

Nasir Jones became the rapper Nas, and his first album asked a fundamental question. “Whose world is this?” and gave the equally fundamental response that “The world is yours.”

When he wrote this iconic hook, the U.S. economy was coming out of recession, having suffered the Savings & Loan Crisis in 1989, Black Friday, and an oil price shock in 1990 as a result of the Gulf War. 30 years later, we face similar headwinds of a looming recession, triggered by a pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, increased oil & food prices, and global supply-chain shortages. These factors are once again putting many business owners, both small and large, out of business.

"Whose World Is This?"

At Kopa, we echo Nas’ visionary sentiment. We truly believe “The World is Yours.” Only for us, they are not the dying words of hope against a socio-economic system that struggles to find compassion for human life. For us the sentiment is very real; as real as the concrete, steel, and asphalt of the streets and buildings Nas and his contemporaries walked and lived in.

With advances in blockchain technology, the idea of owning your world is as tangible as the assets that can be traded on it; decentralized, immutable, trustless. The blockchain is a public ledger that provides an immediate and convenient way to distribute the fractional ownership of complex assets, like businesses, real estate, deeds, titles, medical records, and intellectual property. Combined with teams with real-world expertise and stakeholder-aligned business models, blockchain can allow for the very nature of ownership to be transformed.

Therefore, with Kopa owning your world is not merely a psychological state or a fairy tale. It is connected to access to capital and the level to which you are able to participate. Kopa’s thesis holds: the more of the world one owns, the more one is willing to participate, engage, and see themselves as catalysts for the change they wish to see.

Just imagine: what if Nas owned a piece of the real estate on his block during the recession of the 90s? He may be a wealthy, diversified, real estate mogul today in addition to a Grammy and W.E.B. Dubois Harvard University award winning hip-hop artist. Or if a suburban family invested in their favorite restaurants or shopping centers near their favorite tourist attractions. Or if a rural American owns real estate in Brazil, Great Britain, or Thailand? We believe that the more anyone owns, the more they think through how news events around the world affect them and see how interconnected we all are, which leads to less division across national lines and becomes a catalyst for co-creating a global society that is civil, loving, and one. This is the Kopa Mentality.

At Kopa, the path to ownership comes from reducing barriers to entry and you knowing the information needed to make the right choices for you, your circumstances, and your family. Education provides a sense of empowerment; the choice to change one’s life and choose their path. As a result, Kopa has invested in quality content that teaches you how to discern fact from opinion, develop your own view on investing, how real estate and blockchain actually works, and opportunities in asset tokenization. We have invested in community building a diverse network of peers for research and support to remove bias from your investment process. We have a team of professionals that have collectively transacted over $10B in commercial real estate transactions, and are ready to help guide you around the pitfalls they have seen and experienced in a system set up to fail would-be investors by lack of transparency and choice.

Kopa is a marketplace that simplifies commercial investing giving member investors access to cash flowing real estate. One can compare and review commercial real estate projects all across the globe to find the right direct investment opportunities. Our first properties are in Virginia, California, and New York. KOPA will start by onboarding new properties domestically across the U.S. markets and submarkets, then scale internationally on our fast-growing platform.

Kopa is beyond excited to bring the words of ownership, once reserved for pipe dreams and metaphors for all but a few, into reality. This underlies our tagline to “Own Your World.” And, as we work together, we will prove that “The World Is Ours” as we grow.
